10 Moving Tips to Keep Your Pets Happy

October 11, 2018

Moving with pets can be difficult. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. With these ten simple moving tips, you can keep your pets happy and safe during your upcoming transition.

10 Moving Tips for People with Pets

1. Keep your pet’s essentials close at hand

To ensure your pet has what it needs, pack a bag with the animal’s food and water bowls, leashes, collars, beds, toys and any needed medication and keep it accessible.

2.  Transfer your veterinary records

If you’re moving to a new area, you’ll need to ensure you contact your
veterinarian for a printout or transfer of your pet’s medical records.

3. Visit the property beforehand

If at all possible, take your pet to visit your new home before you move in entirely. This can help minimize the animal’s stress on moving day.

4. Establish the home

Get your home set up as much as possible before moving in with your pet. This helps ease the transition for your four-legged friend.

5. Transport your own pets

When it comes time to move to your new house, take your pets there in your personal car. Both dogs and cats should be confined to crates covered with light sheets to minimize fear or anxiety.

6. Give your pet a safe space

When you first move into your new home, close your animal in one room with their food and water bowls, toys, and a bed. This approach will allow your animal to get comfortable in one room before acclimating to the entire home.

7. Keep your pets indoors

When you arrive at your new house, keep pets like cats indoors. While dogs can be taken outside to relieve themselves, they should be leashed. Animals that run off during this period are likely to get lost.

8. Update all microchip or collar information

Once you move, be sure to update any addresses, phone numbers, or microchip information for your animals.

9. Keep your pet’s routines predictable

If you always feed the dog at 6:00 p.m., don’t bump it to 8:00 p.m. during your move. Change is difficult enough for animals, and keeping their daily routines as regular as possible is an effective way to give them a sense of security and normalcy.

10. Pet-proof your new home

When you arrive at your new home, take a walk through to double-check that everything is safe for your pet. Fix things like exposed electrical cords, leftover pest poison or traps, and insecure or faulty screens.
